Nearly 70 years ago, the Army Air Corps entrusted the layout and design of Hickam Field, one of its newest installations, to Captain Howard B. Nurse.  This visionary young Captain set out to create a neighborhood using efficient planning. techniques of the time.  Today, significant steps are being taken to preserve Captain Nurse’s now-historic vision.

In 2005, the Air Force and Hickam Communities entered into a privatization agreement that includes the replacement and renovation of more than 600 residential units in Earhart Village. To date, hundreds of new units have been constructed and undergone extensive renovation.

Since the Air Force and Hickam Communities entered into a privatization agreement to improve the quality of living standards for Hickam’s Airmen and their Families in 2005, more than 250 new homes have been constructed.

Onizuka Village was named in tribute to Col Ellison Onizuka, a Hawaii-born astronaut who was part of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. To honor Col Onizuka’s service to our nation and his ties to Hawaii, all streets in Onizuka Village will reflect an Earth and outer space theme, translated into the Hawaiian language. Hickam Communities is proud to honor the memory of Col Onizuka, a true American hero, and we hope you will share in our pride when you become a resident of Onizuka Village.
